anastasia
Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova was born June 18, 1901 in the family's summer mansion in St. Petersburg. When Anastasia was still a baby, Alexandra wore black because her grandmother, Victoria, died.
Anastasia had the most lively, spirited personality out of all the duchesses. She was fascinated with photography and experimented with self portraits and illusions. Like her older sisters, she liked painting, especially flowers. Anastasia decorated her journals with watercolor paintings of colorful flowers. She even colored in some of the black and white photographs.
Her aunt, Grand Duchess Olga, remembered Anastasia as: "brimming with life and mischief and laughing so often," (23, Kurth). She was Grand Duchess Olga's favorite niece.
Anastasia and her sisters liked to dress up in bohemian clothes and perform family plays. With her extended family, however, she was less docile. Her cousins remembered Anastasia as "'a nasty little girl,'" 'wild and rough' a hair puller, a leg-biter, and a tease to servants,'" (89, Kurth).
Their French tutor, Pierre Gilliard remembered her as:
"the imp of the whole house and the glummest of faces would always brighten in her presence, for it was impossible to resist her jokes and nonsense."
She was only 17 years old when she was murdered with her family on July 17, 1918.
